About the Book:

They say if you remember the sixties, you weren’t there. Baloney! If you were young and Irish, you will remember the sixties as the Golden Age of the Showband. That phenomenon, which was uniquely Irish, sprung open the doors of a claustrophobic Ireland, where unemployment, emigration and the Church determined how you lived.

The shackles of a closed, oppressive society could not contain the exuberance with which the youth of Ireland embraced the sixties.  Music which hitherto could only be listened to on crackling radios and gramophones, came rolling into every town and village in Ireland as showbands criss-crossed the country.

The drudgery of the week left behind, dresses and suits were donned as girls and boys walked, cycled or drove to a venue, where they could dance the night away and maybe find romance.

It is hard to imagine now, as Ireland leads the age of technology and brings her emigrants home, just what a revolution the showbands started.

Sure, they faced opposition but doesn’t everything that threatens the status quo?

Read how Ireland emerged from being a backward, priest-ridden country to becoming one of the most open and economically wealthy countries in the world and the part the showbands played in that transformation.
