About the Author: Ann Catherine Ryan

I was born on the 29th September 1941. I have been writing since 1989 and had three articles published in Realta, the quarterly magazine of The Irish Astrological Association where I served on the committee for six years. During that time I studied and taught Astrology and the use of Tarot cards.  I worked as professional Astrologer and Tarot Card reader for twenty years.  I have also qualified as a Reiki Healer.

I have written four books so far.

My first book ‘Its Dangerous to be Safe’, is about my parents and their daily struggle to rear their large family.

My second book “Back to Square one” is based on true childhood experiences and growing up in a large family in Ireland in the forties and fifties. It gives a comical take on my experiences and adventures during my journey.

My third book “Rosie” is based on Rosie O’Hara, aged 13 Rosie was sent to work in Morefield, miles away form home by her cold hearted mother Cora.

Lonely and afraid she began having terrifying nightmares which seemed to hold a dire warning.  In Morefield she attracted the unwanted attention of the spoilt and arrogant Jason Stewart the only son and heir to the Stewart estate.  He pursued her relentlessly and eventually violently raped her.

Even after marrying Prudence Lacey, a mentally unstable and jealous woman, his obsession with Rosie continued unabated.

Things reached boiling point when Rosie became pregnant with his baby, at the same time Prudence fell pregnant!

This turn of events brought about death and disaster.  Then Rosie’s emerging plysic abilities sent her on a mission which changed her life forever.

My fourth book “Rosie’s Awakening” - Rosie’s difficult journey continues.  Although she and Michael now live happily with the Granger sisters in Grandwell, Jason Stewart still thwarts her life and search for pease.  Will he ever leave her alon?  Her budding romance with Gregory Murray is a failure.  She learns who her real parents are, which changes her whole life.  Then tragedy strikes the Stewart family once more!  Will Rosie help Jason this time?

Chapter 1

1923

The loud ringing of the alarm jerked Rosie O‘Hara from her restless sleep. It was five- thirty on a cold November morning and her pokey little room was freezing. Sitting bolt upright in her narrow bed with her heart beating rapidly, hair clinging damply to her forehead, she recalled her terrifying dream. That same dream she’d been having these last two years which left her drained and very afraid.

Each time she was running away from a shadowy figure chasing her and just when she reached the edge of a deep black hole, she’d woken up. Only this time the figure had gotten closer and stretched long bony fingers to push her into its gaping maw. The shrill alarm of the clock saved her before those fingers touched her or she could make out its blurred features.

Crouched in bed and mulling over the horrible nightmare, she wondered what would happen if she was pushed over that edge.  It would happen some night she’d no doubt, as the figure got closer each time.

May 1932.

“Christ almighty,” he muttered, “I’m runnin’ late again, I’ll haveta try a different way teh work teh see if it’s any quicker.”

Taking a right turn, he swerved around the corner and peddled furiously along Bushy Park road towards Glanard in Blackrock. As he sped along his thoughts turned to his boss - Billy Keene. “that snotty upstart he fumed, I hate his guts, the rotten little bastard, an’ I notice lately he’s keepin’ a closer eye on me, appearin’ every few minutes, marr yahh that he’s checkin’ on progress, but I know what he’s up teh, the cunnin’ little upstart.”

Johnny Lynch was feeling very pissed off.

For he’d always worked hard and never slackened, but because he needed this work so badly he was polite and friendly to Billy’s face, but secretly thought him to be a lazy blackguard, who fell on his feet when his oul father before him, Jake Keene kicked the bucket. Billy inherited the building contractors business, the lucky so and so.

Ann sat listening and alert above the whirring of the sewing machine, and glanced at the clock for the umpteenth time. The big hand had hardly moved since her last inspection.  Oh’ how she hated that clock, after years of sitting in the same place on the mantelpiece over the smoky fire, its white face was faded to a dirty yellow. But still, it kept good time and loudly ticked away each long minute.

Turning to look at her mother Alice, sitting in her usual spot near the window and crouched over the sewing machine. As usual Alice was wearing her thick horn-rimmed glasses that made her look stern and remote, her long black hair tightly tucked into a severe roll at the nape of her neck and covered by a hairnet, while her work-reddened hands carefully turned the wheel. A loose flowery apron covered her baggy dress, and well-worn shoes and laddered stockings completed the ensemble. But in spite of her shapeless and tatty clothes she still looked very beautiful to Ann.

Unaware of her daughter’s scrutiny, Alice continued sewing the final seam of her latest creation. Holding the two pieces of material firmly together she deftly fed it under the stabbing needle.

Suddenly the whirring of the sewing machine stopped, her mother cocked her head, listened for a few moments then whispered, “I think he’s gone Ann, quick run out an, collect d’eggs, an, bring them teh Melda”, then carried on pedalling and the whirring started afresh.

Ann, awaiting this signal for what seemed like hours, jumped up and charged noisily out the back door, sturdy legs pumping, loose soles on her shoes slapping loudly as she bounded round the side of the house. There she halted, and holding her breath listened intently, then let out a sigh of relief as she heard the echo the horse and cart clattering off into the distance. Her father Johnny was definitely gone………..

Rosie waited until Jason’s heart-wrenching sobs abated, then quietly turned to leave.  As she moved towards the door it burst open and she was confronted by a furious John Stewart who demanded “What on earth are you doing here?  Without waiting for an answer he rushed on, “How dare you come into my house and upset my son who is suffering enough because of you”

Rosie tried to speak but without waiting for her explanation he added harshly, “Get out of my house immediately and don’t ever show your face here again”.
