About the Book:

In 2010 Gerry Walsh published his first book, How’ ya Doc? which is based on a history of the Belvedere Newsboys’ Club, from 1918 to  present times. Unfortunately, and at that time of publication, many of names of the boys in some of the photographs published in Gerry’s book, were unknown. However, in this book, and with the kindness of many people connected with the Belvedere Newsboys’ Club, most of that information has been updated and published here.

Young boys from the Inner-City areas of Dublin joined the Belvedere Newsboys’ Club on reaching twelve years of age. Many of them became involved in Boxing and Football, others took to the Guitar and music. They also attended workshops that concentrated on various crafts, including shoe repair. For some of these young boys the Club was a “Safe Haven” from the many temptations of the life which surrounded them. Each of the   leaders in the Club, over the years, were known to the boys as ‘Doc’, this name came about because the original co-founder of the Club, William Lombard Murphy, was a Medical Doctor.

This book contains over 300 photographic images, some old and some not so old and stories depicting the life and times of these young lads from the Belvedere Newsboys’ Club. The beach in Termonfeckin, County Louth was the original Camp Site for the BNC from 1941-1964.
